COMMUNITY ZERO WASTE

Our Climate, Our Whenua

By Jo Shanks

Abstract

My climate my Whenua, why we should all act like fungus!

A presentation exploring the interconnected nature of waste reduction and kaitiakitanga; empowering communities to care for the whenua and find their synergies. How we as facilitators must find our connections and pool our resources to act as one.

CBEC Ecosolutions

I have been an Environmental Educator for EcoSolutions, one of CBEC's enterprises which provides waste minimisation education throughout Northland.

EcoSolutions was formed over 17 years ago as a community environmental hub that provided advice on minimising waste and protecting the local environment from activities that cause pollution and degradation.
We educate business and the community on how much of what is going to landfills is a potential resource that could otherwise be re used, recycled or repurposed.   For six years now, and love putting my lifelong hippy habits to use! I love doing upcycle workshops, showing folks how composting and wormfarming are a fun way to feed our gardens AND reduce our impact on Ranganui by reducing greenhouse gases. I enjoy making natural plaster pizza ovens and garden surrounds using the resources papatuanuku provides, making beeswax lunchwraps to reduce our need for packaging. I also like showing folks how easy it is to make cheese, jam and preserves .. so basically, I am a premature granny!!

I would love to show you what we are getting up to in Northland to increase Kaitiakitanga and reduce waste!
